This article is based on rumors and leaks. Take everything you read with a grain of salt as nothing is 100% confirmed.
🍭 short and sweet
Haptic buttons are seemingly not going to make it to the 15 Pro
USB-C on iPhone 15 is basically a go at this point
iPhone 15 will be able to charge using unlicensed USB-C and MagSafe chargers (i.e. bring your own charger, and it will charge at full speed)
Since the original iPhone 15 episode I published about a month ago, we’ve gotten some new updates to those original rumors.
This week, I just wanted to go over some of the updated leaks to illustrate some of the new updates since that episode.
No haptic buttons this year
In the original episode, I mentioned the possibility of iPhone 15 Pro getting solid-state buttons with haptic feedback. I noted that the volume and power buttons would not get this technology, but instead, a multifunction button would replace the ringer switch and possibly have haptics.
Yeeeaaahh...would you like the good news first or the bad news (unless you consider them both bad news)?
Eh, I’ll start with the bad news: no haptics for that either.
The multifunction button, for the time being, will supposedly be just a normal button like all the others.
The volume buttons will also not adopt the single pill shape like originally rumored. Updated renders show the iPhone 15 Pro will seemingly have the standard dual-button design we’ve had for years now.
Now for the good news (or, for some people, the second bad news): the multifunction button is presumedly staying.
That could be good or bad depending on your stance on the ringer switch, but I do consider this good since it seems to add much more versatility than the classic switch.
But now, we have some bonus good news!
There is a possibility that the iPhone 16 Pro could get the haptic buttons instead. Nothing definitive yet, but there IS a possibility, so hopefully that comes to pass.
USB-C is definitely happening
It pretty much goes without saying that USB-C will absolutely happen on the iPhone 15.
Rumors are storming.
Apple is developing USB-C EarPods.
The change is definitely happening (and not a moment too soon)!
In addition to that, AirPods Pro 2 (and possibly the Maxes?) are supposedly getting USB-C charging cases around the iPhone 15 release. Unfortunately, however, AirPods 3 (and the eventual AirPods 4) will stick with lightning (why…?).
But the exciting part is just starting! ⚡️
Apple is dropping MFi and MagSafe protocols
Wait…what?
Yep, it’s been reported that Apple is dropping all proprietary charging protocols and going fully universal!
That means two things:
Apple is supposedly ditching its plans for putting an MFi chip in the USB-C port. This means full charging speeds for all iPhone 15 models, no matter what cable you’re using!
Apple is replacing MagSafe with Qi 2.0 (which is basically universal MagSafe anyway, with magnetic connections and 15W charging speeds). This is apparently something that Apple worked with the Wireless Charging Consortium (WCC) to develop—basically, it’s a new wireless charging standard that any phone, iOS or Android, can adopt.
From what I can tell, it seems that most other rumors are practically unchanged, so if you would like to hear about some of the changes coming up for the iPhone 15, be sure to check out my episode on ‘nexgen - become savvy’:
In the meantime, if you enjoyed this post, feel free to share it with your friends!
Anyway, that’s all for this week. Adios! 👋
